A tale of three kichadis

Been craving for kichadi/Kichri, an Indian dish made f rice and lentils, but was not brave enough to order one from local restaurants as the earlier experience was not that pleasant. Most places just mix rice with dal and do a tempering with red chillies…

But things have changed recently with many new joints have introduced kind of better kichadis – okay not as good as some home cooked ones from India.

The problem with kichadi is everyone has favourite, which is either made at their home or a close friends home. Like Kadi, Kichachi also has differ as per the region they come from.

The first one I ordered is from a lady who makes it at home the Gujarati style. You need to order a day in advance and go and pick up. So it will work only if drive and can plan your lunch 24 hrs in advance. The Kichadi was nice – homely – served along with a kadi. The Kadi was sweetish, which is not my favourite. The price was around QR15 – need to check again. Got her contact from FB, will try and find and update here.

The second one was Bombayfood.in and they deliver using food delivery apps like Wishbox, which we used. The Kichadi comes with papad and pickle. Out of three I tried, this was by far superior and closer to the one I loved to eat in Mumbai. Now it could be a bias as I am more used to this type of kichadi, which is spicier and the rice and lentils are well mixed. I think they use different types of lentils. The price is QR15, so if its free delivery then fine.

The final one was from Kailash Parbat and it was just like one you order from any decent restaurant. Well packed, came with a raitha kind of thing along with a roasted papad and pickle. The taste was more assembly line – can’t find much fault, but also can’t find any pluses. They used basmati rice and it was a little watery. At QR19 (1 riyal more on wishbox than their dine-in rate), it is the most expensive one we tried and not that special as they promised.

So out the three Bombayfood.in comes on top with a small margin. Heard there are a few more new joints in town serving this comfort food, which is staple in many Indian homes during winter and or when someone falls ill. Will try them in the coming days and update.

Till then, eat, pray and love.
